Work Description

A wall-based painting work structured as a procedural system rather than a purely static image. The piece is conceived as a painting whose composition, execution, and possible revision are governed by an explicit rule set and a visible evaluative mechanism. The work should retain the legibility of a painting on the wall while making the surrounding logic of authorship, delegation, optimization, and value production part of the piece itself. The concept aligns with a practice grounded in system-based structures, delegated production, and the critique of institutional and market authority.

Production Notes

Define and produce a first wall-based test painting with the following elements: (1) a painted surface or series of painted surfaces suitable for wall display; (2) a written production protocol that determines how the image is composed, executed, or revised; (3) a delegated production component in which some aspect of execution may be performed by an assistant, system, or external rule-set rather than solely by the artist’s hand; (4) a visible scoring, ranking, or evaluative layer that can exist as accompanying wall text, printed metric panel, framed instruction sheet, or adjacent display; and (5) an integrated documentation layer recording the decision logic and production sequence. Necessary materials should be treated as the minimum viable set for a first production test: painting support for wall mounting, paint and application tools, printed or framed instruction/evaluation text, mounting hardware, and optional simple display or print component if needed to surface the scoring logic. Avoid assuming complex custom hardware in the first test unless required by the rule system. The outcome should function simultaneously as a painting and as evidence of the system that produced and evaluates it.

Evaluation History

HOLD

The work aligns strongly with the procedural and evaluative logic of the practice, and its visible scoring/display apparatus makes the system legible as part of the piece. However, in the current exhibition frame it reads more as an installation or dashboard-based systems work than as a resolved flat wall-based painting. The conceptual structure is clear, but market readiness and immediate painting legibility are weaker than preferred for this show. Recommendation: HOLD pending either reframing or a simpler wall-based iteration that preserves the evaluative logic while strengthening the work’s identity as a painting.
