Work Description

The Good Candidate is a wall-based figurative relief depicting a single frontal or near-frontal human figure who appears carefully assembled for acceptance. The figure should look presentable, calm, and socially correct, but slightly off: too composed, too optimized, too visibly trying. The work should stage social fit as a performed surface, showing a person who has studied the codes of legitimacy, taste, professionalism, and belonging and reproduced them as carefully as possible without ever becoming fully convincing. The emotional register should remain earnest, controlled, slightly sad, and faintly embarrassing rather than grotesque or comedic. The result should be immediately legible, image-forward, and strong in documentation, with a clear silhouette and a contemporary pathetic/aspirational tone.

Production Notes

Produce one wall-based shallow relief or shaped wall object depicting a single human figure. Keep the figure frontal or near-frontal, iconic, and highly legible from a distance. The figure should suggest presentability, self-control, and effortful legitimacy through posture, styling, expression, and overall composition. Use a shaped support or shallow built-up surface to give the work objecthood, but keep the depth limited so it still reads clearly as an image. Favor simple formal decisions, a restrained palette, and straightforward materials. The finish may remain slightly naive, but the overall result must feel intentional, resolved, and exhibition-ready. Avoid detailed realism, expressive painterly complexity, grotesque exaggeration, overt text, or overly narrative background elements. The figure should feel like someone optimized for approval, employability, and belonging, while still carrying a quiet sense of strain, sadness, or social overperformance.

APPROVE

PR-GOOD-CANDIDATE-012 succeeds as a figurative relief about social optimization and performed legitimacy. The frontal male figure, folded arms, subdued palette, and slightly awkward polished-presentable demeanor all support the brief’s central idea of someone carefully assembled for approval without ever becoming fully convincing. The shallow relief structure is useful here: it gives the figure a bureaucratic objecthood and slightly manufactured presence without tipping into unnecessary complexity. The work is not spectacular formally, but it is coherent, legible, and conceptually aligned. It has decent documentation value, solid exhibition fit, and enough pathos to avoid reading as a generic portrait. Recommendation: approve.

€5,400.00

Approved 80x60 shallow relief with strong exhibition fit, clear figurative legibility, and good documentation/circulation value. Pricing is set above the stronger flat 80x100 market-language painting at 4,800 EUR because the relief objecthood and psychologically specific figure add distinctiveness, while remaining close to the current exhibition range given its solid-but-not-spectacular formal resolution and moderate market upside.
